Is renting a car covered by my insurance?

The following coverages may cover driving a rental car if you have insurance:

Liability insurance for cars: protects you from liability (damage to others) up to a certain limit.

Comprehensive and collision insurance: protects the rental car from damage.
Insurance for homeowners: protects your car’s contents in the event of theft or damage.

Health coverage: protects you from accidents-related injuries.
Insurance on life: in the event of an accident, provides death benefits.

Even if you don’t have collision coverage, your auto insurance may even cover rental car damage if you get into an accident, depending on the state where you live or rent the vehicle.

However, in some cases, you are only covered up to your coverage limits, and you must pay your deductible out of pocket for injuries and damages.

The amount of time you can rent a car while still being covered may be limited by some personal auto policies.
