Can a pet with an existing medical condition be insured?

Most pet insurance companies won’t cover an accident or illness if the pet already has a condition.

However, you may still be able to get coverage for other kinds of injuries or illnesses for your pet.
Accidents and illnesses brought on by pre-existing conditions that are considered “curable” will be covered by a small number of pet insurance companies.

Most of the time, these are defined by strict rules about how long a pet must be free of that condition to be eligible.

The cost of your insurance typically depends on your age. In general, your monthly premium will be higher the older your pet is.

Pre-existing conditions can also develop in older pets, rendering them ineligible for coverage in the event of illness or injury. Lastly, a lot of providers won’t even sell policies for pets over the age of 10 or will only sell policies with limited coverage.
