Insurgency will change our screens until the end of time
Of the relative multitude of elements coming to macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS this fall, I may be most amped up for gadgets.
No, I mean it. Widgets!
Widgets, of course, have existed for a very long time.
Three years ago, with iOS 14, Apple completely redesigned the widget experience, providing us with a new widget template, widgets on the home screen, and smart stacks.
They were limited to a sidebar on the iPad, but a year later, iPadOS 15 made it possible to place widgets anywhere on the home screen.
We were able to place iPhone-like widgets in the notification shade off the right side of the screen in macOS Big Sur.
However, Apple is making some welcome adjustments with the upcoming OS updates, which will place widgets at the forefront of the Apple ecosystem. I’m here for the Widgetpocalypse, which is coming.
With the possible exception of TVOS, all of Apple’s platforms have had widgets for a long time. WatchOS, on the other hand, only had them in the Siri watch face, and they were very limited.
With watchOS 10, a swipe up or move of the computerized crown shows a rundown of gadgets that show significant data from your Macintosh Watch applications without expecting to open the application.
It’s much better than trying to fit important information into a small problem. When background operations are taking place, this widget stack will display little interactive cards that let you, for instance, pause or resume timers or music playback. How Apple’s upcoming widget revolution will forever change our screens I might be most excited about the features coming to macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS this fall. No, I mean it. Widgets!
