How do you obtain personal property or contents insurance?

There are typically three ways to obtain personal property or contents insurance.

Personal belongings, additional living expenses, and liability are all covered by one or more of the aforementioned insurance policies.

Furthermore, each policy has unique restrictions and exclusions.
Dependents, such as children, are included in an insurance policy’s definition of an insured.

The named insured’s spouse is also included. The best course of action is to get in touch with the insurance provider and inquire about whether a member of your family is included in the policy’s definition of an insured.

You can talk to your agent or broker about your particular circumstances and make sure you have the coverage you need.

In a location where only one person has an insurance policy, good friends or roommates may live together. Due to the fact that they do not fall under the definition of the insured, roommates are not covered by an insurance policy unless they are named on it.

Therefore, you are not covered for your belongings if your friend owns a house and you live in it or share an apartment and you are not named as an insured on their personal property insurance policy.

To be covered by their policy, you would need a renter’s policy, or you could ask to be added as a named insured.
