Is Tornado Damage Covered by Home Insurance?

The majority of standard home insurance policies cover damages caused by “covered perils” to your dwelling, other structures, and personal property.

A different term for what causes the damage, such as wind, is a covered peril.

Your personal liability (in the event that someone gets hurt on your property) and loss of use of your home (if it becomes inhabitable, for instance) may also be covered by home insurance.

The majority of policies cover losses caused by tornado-related risks like hail, lightning strikes, water damage, falling objects, and wind. Damages caused by power surges, which can also occur during tornadoes, are covered by some policies.

Tornadoes frequently come with torrential downpours. Flood damage to your home or its contents is typically not covered by standard homeowners insurance.

The National Flood Insurance Program, on the other hand, sells flood insurance through major home insurance companies.
