The first day of the FTC v. Microsoft hearing began exactly as I anticipated:

Microsoft dropped a bombshell about Sony. Sony against Microsoft.

During her opening statement, Microsoft’s attorney Beth Wilkinson delivered a shocking email from Sony’s PlayStation chief Jim Ryan before we had even reached the hour mark.

Ryan’s conversation with Chris Deering, the former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that the PlayStation boss of Sony didn’t really believe that Call of Duty would only be available on Xbox and that PlayStation would be fine.

Ryan stated, “It is not an exclusivity play at all.” They have the money to make such moves and are thinking much further ahead than that.

Ryan had spoken with Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, and even received assurances from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, so he was not concerned about Call of Duty’s exclusivity.

Days after Ryan’s email exchange, Sony was also about to announce its plan to acquire Bungie.

Ryan made reference to Bungie when he said, “We have some good stuff cooking.” We’ll be fine, more than fine, but I’m not content, and I’d prefer this hadn’t happened.
